Delivering a cash sum when accidents happen
We all have accidents from time to time. And as we get older,
the thought of having an accident or injury worries us even
more. Fortunately, some accidents are less serious than others,
although the may also put a strain on our finances, as recuperation
can take longer as we get older.
Fractures, burns and broken bones can take a long time to
heal which means other costs increase too - transport to the
hospital, time off work, physiotherapy or keeping your house
warm for long periods.
The Over 50's Accident Plan is a straightforward policy and
from just £55 per year offers a choice of two levels
of care and provides up to £30,000 to help deal with
the consequences of an accidental injury.
We will also cover you for any personal
effects that you may have damaged during your accident in
the hope that this will ease your worries and aid you recuperation
during your period of rest.
We’ve even made it easy for you to apply for cover.
Simply visit
www.manorinsurance.co.uk/over50s.html for full details of
benefits and to apply online. Alternatively call 0800 092
4383 during office hours if you wish to talk to someone.

This is general advice in relation to Swine
Flu and travel insurance
Q1 We are due to travel shortly but my wife
probably has swine flu. Can we cancel and claim a refund?
A1 Yes. Provided there is a doctor’s
certificate confirming the condition.
Q2 I had to self-diagnose Swine Flu based on
my symptoms and NHS advice. Am I covered to cancel my holiday
even though I do not have a firm diagnosis or confirmation
of medical necessity from my GP?
A2 Insurers who are members of the ABI have
agreed to accept as evidence the unique ID number issued by
the National Pandemic Service coupled with the original label
of the prescribed anti-flu drugs which show the patient’s
name and date issued. It is therefore important to retain
this medication label to verify a claim.
Q3 Am I covered to cancel my holiday if the
FCO has issued advice against travel?
A3 No. You should contact your tour operator
or airline.
Q4 Am I covered to cancel my holiday if I am
concerned about travelling because of Swine Flu?
A4 No. Disinclination to or fear of travel
is not covered.
Q5 The airline refused to let me on board as
they thought I had Swine Flu. Am I covered for cancellation
costs?
A5 The airline’s medical officer will
need to provide written confirmation of the reason for denial
of boarding. If it transpires that you did not have Swine
Flu your claim will be against them for ‘failure of
service’. The legal expenses section of your travel
insurance may assist with this claim against the airline.
Q6 Whilst on holiday abroad my travelling companion
caught Swine Flu. Can I remain with him?
A6 The same terms and conditions should
apply for Swine Flu as for any other medical condition. If
the policy usually provides cover for a travelling companion
to remain with them, then this would also apply in the case
of an insured person being taken ill with Swine Flu if it
is recommended by a doctor.
Q7 I am suffering from Swine Flu abroad. Am
I covered for a friend/family member in the UK to travel out
to be with me?
A7 Cover would be provided subject to normal
policy terms and conditions, which would generally provide
cover for one person to stay with them or travel from the
UK to escort them home if medically necessary and recommended
by the treating doctor.
Q8 I was suspected of having Swine Flu and quarantined
beyond my scheduled return date shown on my insurance. Is
my cover still valid?
A8 The policy would be extended until you
return home and there would be cover under the policy for
the costs associated with unexpected accommodation or hospital
fees and the additional costs such as new flights etc. in
bringing you home at the end of the quarantine period. This
should be approved and arranged via the emergency medical
assistance company shown in the policy.

Swinton Fined
by FSA
Swinton Insurance was fined £770,000 by
the FSA earlier this week and ordered to repay over 350,000
customers it had incorrectly charged. The FSA found that for
a period between 2006 and 2008 the firm had mis-sold Payment
Protection Insurance (PPI). This fine comes after a long line
of banks have also received similar censure.
At Manor Insurance we have never sold PPI as
it was clear to us that it was a never a policy that would
offer genuine benefits to the majority of our customers. We
are pleased to see the FSA crack down on those that sell it
unduly.

UK and Channel
Islands end reciprocal health agreement
It has been announced that UK residents
visiting the Channel Islands will no longer receive free medical
attention if they fall ill or have an accident. Likewise residents
of the islands will now have to pay for any medical attention
they receive in the UK.
The only exception to this is that immediate
emergency treatment in A&E will still be provided free.
However if you are transferred to a ward,
have any meals provided or need medical repatriation the costs
will now fall on the traveller. As the Channel islands are
outside of the EU the EHIC will not help UK visitors. It is
now vital that travellers between these countries have adequate
travel insurance to protect from unexpected medical costs.
Travelinsured.co.uk,
the specialist travel arm of Manor Insurance, are pleased
to offer policies to both UK and Channel Island residents
of all ages, right up to 110 years old. Click here to get
your quote now.
And don’t forget, anyone calling our office
and taking an annual policy before 31 August who quotes "Airbourne"
to our advisor can claim a free Corgi ™ Red Arrow™.

Why is it so
hard for young drivers to get insurance for classic cars?
Classic car, cherished car, agreed value cover,
call it what you like, is designed to provide low cost cover
for vehicles that are NOT daily vehicles, are kept in garages,
treasured by their owners and have a certain historic interest.
As such the premiums are set at a very low rate and the terms
offered tend to be extremely attractive (low excess, agreed
value, etc.).
| Now these rates are at
the lowest they have been in our 20 years as insurance
brokers. In reality they have reduced drastically since
the late 80’s as whilst inflation has affected us
all, the premiums we charge have basically been static.
This has been achieved in two ways. The first is the use
of technology at the time of quote meaning the insurance
companies have far less staff. The second is a reduction
in flexibility. |
|
We well remember issuing cover with Norwich
Union for 17 year olds who just happened to own 11 year old
Ford Escorts, did low mileage and said they kept them in the
garage. Back in the late 80’s this was basically the
classic premium doubled! Now of course this had a severe impact
on the overall results of the Cherished Car book of business
and so the age limit was raised.
The problem we now have is that so many
people buy online, or deal direct with the insurer call centre.
This method of buying means that you either fit or your don’t,
no ifs or buts. For those that still deal via a specialist
broker, such as Manor Insurance Services, the situation isn’t
so bad. A good broker should be able to present a case to
your insurer and get terms, but there must be a good case.
What helps? Well, it is essential that the
young driver has their own car, insured in their own name;
12 months claim free driving since passing their test would
also be useful. How long have you dealt with this broker/insurer?
If you’re a loyal client then expect more than if you
chop and change insurers from year to year. Be realistic over
the mileage, remember you will probably have declared your
annual mileage, this may increase with an extra driver available
to take the car out. Finally consider your car. If you are
a member of the Ford RS Owners Club expect a different response
to someone with a 1930’s Austin 7.

Good news for buy to let landlords
For the past year the news for buy to let
landlords has been doom and gloom. Tenancy defaults on the
rise and property prices crashing.
| Well now for some
good news!
In the past, if your tenants were
in receipt of benefits, most insurers charged a higher
premium for the buildings insurance. Manor Insurance
Services are pleased to advise that all this is changing.
As long as the tenancy agreement is directly between
the landlord and tenant then there will be no surcharge
added to the premium.
“With the credit crunch more
landlords are finding their tenants are receiving benefits
yet the level of claims arising from this is not significantly
higher” says Director, Ian Mantel, “So we
went to insurers and we have developed a policy to suit
the needs of the buy to let sector” |

Employers Liability
Good news for firms inundated with paper
work. As of 1 October the Department of Work and Pensions
(DWP) say that you no longer need to display a copy of your
Employer's Liability Insurance Certificate at every work place.
It is now sufficient to have an electronic copy freely available
to all staff.
But this doesn't mean you can do without
the insurance. It is still a legal requirement for all firms
employing people. If you fail to hold the correct cover your
firm is liable to a fine of £2,500 PER DAY
for every day cover is lacking.
Many people think you do not need cover
if you only work with your spouse or close family. That is
true if you are a partnership or a sole trader. But if you
have formed a limited company the company must hold cover.
After all, the whole purpose of setting up a limited company
is to form a separate legal entity and the directors are all
employees.
There are very few exceptions to this rule
so best advice is to talk to your insurance advisor.
If your firm has no cover at present then
it is imperative you make arrangements without delay.
Whether you work from home, have retail
premises, a lock up or a small industrial unit please contact
us today. We'll be happy to help.
